About Big Boss Man
Imagine this scenario... |
You approach the open door of a local club, and the music gets your attention. Actually, you felt the rhythm section as you opened the car door, but now that you're inside the club you get the full experience. From a modest stage blasts a song that you love, but never gets any radio airplay, and the band is cookin' through a furiously groovy rendition. Powerful, soulful vocals season a musical stew of guitars, bass and drums through a variety of styles ranging from blues to soul to classic rock to funk and back again.
But one thing is different: these aren't the same old songs you ALWAYS hear from cover bands. These songs are more eclectic and imaginative, and the crowd responds with enthusiasm, dancing and grinding within arms length of the stage as the room just keeps getting hotter. Sound familiar??? If not, then you haven't been out to see BigBossMan. Since 2000, BigBossMan has been “layin' it down” at various clubs and events all across Central Virginia, and has developed a loyal fanbase by playing the songs you love, but rarely hear on the radio. Doug Bilski (guitars/vocals) explains: “John and I had played in different classic rock bands previously, and we knew each other pretty well. We share a lot of the same ideas about what a band should be - just the right mix of the classics that you love to hear with a sprinkling of some unexpected but exciting tunes as well! We enjoy finding some of those lost favorites and performing them live.” John Hunt (guitar/vocals) adds: “Our secret weapon is our rhythm section (Michael Maher on bass and Greg Handakas on drums) ... they're super funky, lowdown and right on time. A typical show blends a variety of influences into 3+ hours of sweaty, soulful musical energy that does not disappoint. You can dance fast and you can dance slow, or you can just tap your foot and drink beer at your table all night. Regardless, you will hear great old 70's soul and funk, mixed with classic rock, authentic blues, and sweet 4-part vocal harmonies. Chances are you'll come back again... |
A few testimonials..."Big Boss Man’s performance was THE reason my 40th birthday was unforgettable. As we all know, party planning can be stressful. It is so refreshing when people follow through on their commitments. Working with this group was an absolute pleasure. They understood how important this day was and handled everything related to the entertainment with the upmost professionalism. I didn’t worry once about any of the logistics. And for their performance, the music was fantastic. Not only did they play great tunes, they showed a unique ability to read and engage the crowd. I would highly recommend this band for your engagements." "Big Boss Man did an incredible job for our corporate event! We had them join us for a happy hour after a strategic planning session, and they really helped the group blow off some steam!" |
"Big Boss Man was incredible... Booked them for friend celebrating his restaurant doors being open 25 years. So this was a party of all ages young and old...EVERYBODY WAS DANCING.. The music and singing was outstanding. Everyone at the party knew the music and all were singing along with the band. Not only did BBM get the place hopping they had the volumes on point...Loud enough to hear the music and feel it yet quite enough to hear the people next to you without screaming...BIG Boss Man is more than class act....They are Rock N Roll at its best! Thank you BBM for such a Grateful Time!" |
Big Boss Man Q&A
Some questions that were recently posed to the band...
Q. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
A. First and foremost we like to understand the nature of the event and the role that the band will play. Sometimes a band is a focal point for an event, and sometimes not. At Big Boss Man we understand the difference and want the band to fit in a way that works for our customer. Typically we'll meet before the event to go over specifics and answer any questions that they may have.
Q. Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
A. We will always offer the customer a ballpark price quote based on the limited information we may have at the time. Our price quote may increase or decrease slightly based on logistics factors like travel distance, equipment provided by the venue, load-in/load-out details, and adequate cover and power (for outdoor events). We are always happy to discuss our pricing and the details behind the quote!
Q. What types of customers have you worked with?
A. Big Boss Man provides live music for a wide variety of customers, venues, and situations. In the past these have included: local music clubs/bars, fraternity/sorority parties, weddings, neighborhood block parties, birthday parties, corporate holiday functions, large music festivals, and many more. We're open to just about anything!
Q. What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
A. Look for a band with lots of experience in event services - too often bands don't realize the commitment and professionalism needed to really do a good job. A band also needs to realize that event logistics can change on the fly - being adaptable and easy to work with is a big plus! Big Boss Man is always on time, has never canceled a performance, and prepares for each event far in advance. We have over 20 years of experience and great testimonials from previous customers!
Q. What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
A. When it comes to a live band, give particular attention to location and volume needs. Location is key for the band - is there enough space, power, and adequate protection from the elements? Outdoor events can be wonderful but bring additional planning issues when it comes to band gear and stage setups. Volume is also a key point to negotiate. We play fraternity parties at local colleges that are happy for us to be as loud as we can, and we play corporate and private events where a lower volume level is really important. A good professional band should be able to accommodate your preference and adjust on the fly as needed.
